THE GRANARY HOTEL, A UNIQUE WORCESTERSHIRE VENUE
In 2018, The Granary Hotel & Restaurant celebrated 40 years in business. The Granary has always been a family run business and started after Jon & Wendy May bought what was a transport café. The May family and Kelvin their Head Chef; introduced one of the first Carvery Restaurants in the area. Kelvin and the staff at the time worked hard to make the restaurant a place to be seen in, in the area. As the restaurant was so popular, the customers were asking if they could get married, hold private parties, christenings and corporate events, etc. These customer request lead to the building of The Orangery Suite and building of the hotel bedrooms. When I first started work here in 1997, it was a well-established business with a great following, and was run by Jon & Wendy’s daughters Nicky & Susie.
In 2000 with the retirement of the May family; the Granary was sold to Richard Fletcher and it was continued to be run as a family business, with Richard, his children and his father. They continued to develop the business with additions such as market garden, working in conjunction with Amber Project which helps people with learning difficulties to work. Head Chef Tom Court and his staff helped the restaurant gain fine dine quality two AA Rosettes award. Further refurbishments kept the business up to date. The family introduced the Vineyard which produces our own Gusto Wine, the Granary being quite unique for a hotel producing its own wine in Worcestershire.
The Granary in its 40th year saw the arrival of new owners. I am now working for my 3rd owners. Once again, a very much family at its helm, with Khalid and Salim. They have brought with them great ideas and plans for the future development of the Granary. They have already refurbished The Orangery, many of the bedrooms, the reception and are slowly working their way around the whole building. They have plans to convert The Villa (The house on the corner – that was originally blue), to more accommodation and have planning permission for extra bedrooms. Our new Head Chef Todd Turner was trained by Tom Court and has his ambition and energy to continue the plans into the future.
It is so lovely to work for a company that has such a loyal following of customers, grows some of it’s own produce. I love nothing more than to watch the Chef’s go to the market garden and pick our very home grown herbs. You can’t get fresher than that. From field to plate in minutes.
All members of staff here are proud of our local produce, using local suppliers where ever possible.
The future’s bright and we are still going places as a business and would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their continued support. It is not unusual for some of our customers to have be coming to the Granary for almost 40 years. Let us keep the traditions going well into the future.
